How to Keep Your Flowers Fresh

How to Keep Fresh Cut Flowers Looking Their Best

We want any arrangement from us to look its best for as long as possible. Because we fully clean, prep, and strip the lower foliage off your flower stems before they leave our shop, the hard work of fresh flower care is already done. All you need to do is follow these simple steps once they arrive at your door.

Fresh Cut Flower Care Routine

1. ✂️ Give the Stems a Fresh Trim

Snip 2cm off the bottom of the stems at a 45-degree angle right before placing them into your vase. This opens up the pathways so the flowers can drink freely.

2. 💧 Change the Water Regularly

Fill your vase with crisp, cool tap water. Clean water is all healthy, fresh-cut flowers need to thrive.

Completely change and refresh the water every 1 to 2 days. If you know you are prone to forgetting, a few drops of household bleach in the water helps slow bacteria growth between changes and makes cleaning the vase afterwards easier too.

3. ☀️ Choose the Right Spot

Display your arrangement in a cool room away from direct sunlight and air vents.

Keep them away from your kitchen fruit bowl, as ripening fruit releases gases that age flowers quickly.

4. ✨ Remove Fading Flowers

Different flower varieties fade at different times. Gently pluck away individual fading petals or spent blooms as they age to keep the remaining flowers healthy and looking their best.

Fresh Flower Care FAQs

How long should my flowers last with proper care?

Most seasonal bouquets stay fresh for around 5 to 7 days with regular water changes and a cool spot, though hardier varieties like chrysanthemums can last well beyond that.

Is tap water really enough, or should I use filtered water?

Tap water is perfectly fine for cut flowers. What matters more than the water source is how often you change it and keeping the vase clean between fills.

Can I keep my arrangement in the fridge overnight?

We would not recommend it. Home fridges are too cold for most fresh flowers and can actually burn them.

The exception is smaller pieces like buttonholes, corsages or cake flowers kept in a sealed container.

Venue coolrooms are built for drinks and food and are also too cold, so a cool area in your home or space away from direct sunlight and heat sources is the better spot.

Do I need to remove any leaves from the stems?

No need. We have already fully cleaned and prepped the stems for you.

If any stray lower leaves do happen to touch your vase's waterline, just pinch them off to keep the water crystal clear.

Florist Tips for Better Flower Longevity

When your main arrangement finally starts to wind down, don't throw it all away.

Snip the remaining healthy stems short and place them into small bud vases on your bedside table or somewhere you can continue to enjoy them for a few extra days.

If someone in your life could use a little brightness too, you can find us at My Florist Launceston.
